Experimentation

Here is a piece of experimentation I created after looking at a piece of work created by Peter Saville. I created tapes which relates to the 80's and added the colours and techniques used by Peter Saville.

Here is another piece of experimentation I created after looking at a piece of work created by Jasper Goodall. I created someone walking down a catwalk as its an idea I may be using in my idea generation. I then added shapes and colours that are used by Japer Goodall in my illustration.

Graphical Advertising Poster

For this brief I have been set a task to create and design 2 posters for the V&A exhibition 'club to catwalk'. The aim of this brief is to discover how imagery is used and also understand how graphic designers use software to make their work.

Graphical Advertising Posters

This poster looks really creative. The image displayed at the back look great in black and white as it gives a great effect while making the poster look professional. I really like the way the writing is on top of coloured rectangles as it makes the poster stand out.

This poster created by Moyer Hall has great neon colours which im going to use in my final design because it represents the 80's theme. It also stands out because its so bright which reminds me of the style Pop Art which is great for catching the eye. The illustrations are at a large scale which makes it the centre of attention. I feel this is a great way to make the poster look interesting.

This poster I really like because of the large image that fills the whole page. I feel this gives the poster a professional look. The logo placed in the top left I feel was a great idea as its a creative way to attract onlookers.

Final Design

I really enjoyed creating these posters as i got to go quite wild because of the theme we had in place which was 'Club to Catwalk' which had to be designed in the 80's style. This i first thought was going to be a challenge but once i started my research it all started to influence me which helped bring some 80's creativity to mind.

Here is my first final digitally designed poster produced in illustrator with the influence of Jasper Goodall. Here i first started off with a solid plain black background so that everything i added had perfect clarity and stood out easier. I then dropped in my illustration of the catwalk which was made from the shape tool on the left hand side as shown in my design sheets while keeping the colours closely related to Jasper Goodall. I then went on to making the camera flashes which was made with the shape tool and then crinkled to get the flash effect. I added glows and shadows to make the flashes look bright and then copied and pasted them into position while only scaling them larger or smaller. I then went on to making the title 'Club to Catwalk' and placed it and the top right. This i feel looks creative as i joined up two 'T' while stretching the top part of it along and off the poster to create part of a catwalk. I added a white shadow to 'Club' and 'Catwalk' to make it stand out while the colour orange of the title will help draw attention. The last thing i added was the information which i placed and the bottom left. This included the V&A logo, exhibition dates, open and close times, underground logo and stations closest to the exhibition. This was all in the colour white because i feel that this colour on black really stands out and is easy to read. Overall i feel that this poster didn't have much artist influence as it could have however it fits the 80's theme well as i used colours that inspired me from the V&A exhibition. It also has great creativity that flows and stand out on the page which makes this succsessful.

Here is my second final digitally designed poster produced in illustrator with the influence of Peter Saville. Here i first started off with a solid plain red pink background so it bounces out and catches the eye while giving it a glam look. I then placed my illustration of the three tapes which were made with the shape tool on the right had side of the page as shown on my design sheets. I coloured these white, orange and black because these were the colours i was influenced by from the V&A exhibition and also look bright which helps them to stand out. I then added the title 'Club To Catwalk' on the left in the center of the page which was scaled largely and made bold so it was the main icon of the poster. I used the colour black for 'Club' and 'Catwalk' because i feel its a bold colour that stands out on the background its on top of. This had a solid shadow added which was coloured white and it goes well with the black which helps the title look attractive. I used the colour white instead of black for 'To' because i felt that making it white would keep it bright and attractive while the black looking calm and bold just like the outfits of an 80's catwalk. This had a solid orange shadow which helps it to look attractive on the page. I then went on to making labels which i placed around the edges of the page, around the letters and inside the letters. I made these with the rectangle tool while changing the stroke to a rough edge to give it that real label look. These were all in the colours of the 80's style which i saw in the V&A exhibition which look bright while some were in the colours of my artist of influence which was Peter Saville. Two lables had designer logos placed on such as Nike and Levis which were created with the pen tool by drawing over the real logo which i got from Google. After adding lables i then created sparkles by using the circle and star tool to add a glamorous look. I added gradient colour to the circle to get the bright glow while adding a faded shadow with low opacity to create a spreading glow effect. I copied and pasted these amd put the next to each other while only changing the size. The last thing i added was the information which unlike my other poster it was scattered around. This included the V&A logo, exhibition dates, open and close times, underground logo and stations closest to the exhibition. This was all in the colour white because i feel that its an easy colour to read on a background like this. Overall i feel that this poster has too much going on because of all that's on the page however it looks creative and stands out because of all the amazing colours used.

Digital Illustration

Here is my first final digital illustration. Before getting to this stage i had to produced a number of illustrations, pick 2 then develop them until i found my final outcome which i then had to digitally produce.

Here i produced my first chosen illustration that had to closely relate to my artist of influence who was Jasper Goodall. The tools i used to create my illustration was the shape tool, this helped me create most of the things displayed in my illustration. I also used the letter tool to create the arms. The letter i used was 'C'. To get the full effect of my artist of influence all i really did was match up some of the colours used in his piece such as the pink, black and grey with the plain white background. I feel it looks quite plain but really has good creativity which will look great in my final poster design.

Here is my second chosen illustration i digitally designed in illustrator that closely related to Peter Saville. The tools i used for this illustration was the shape tool. I used a range of shapes to create an accurate looking tape that will be used in my final poster. To match my artist of influence i simply took my illustration and added the bold yellow and black colour that Peter Saville used a lot in most of his designs that i see on the internet and also the chosen image i chose to recreate. I feel that my illustration is effective as it relates well with the 80's and also stands out with my artist of influences colours.

Yiying Lu
Yiying Lu is one of the most promising designers of Sydney, Australia. She was born in Shanghai, China, and is a confident artist with many attractive designs and illustrations in her portfolio. She runs her own design studio & teaches design at the University of Technology, Sydney. Her dream job is to furnish visual refreshment to the current Google logo.
Here is a piece of work created by Yiying Lu. I feel this illustration has been created by the pen tool because of its awkward lines and designs. Also the shape tool looks like it has been used to create the little circles that flow accross the page. This piece has very intricut designs and patterns that flow amoungst the page to create a detailed effect. I feel this gives it an attractive look and also different because of the designs used to make up this piece. The colours black and red both create a 80's feel as the red really glows while the solid black helps the glow to stay under control.
Using intricut patterns for my poster design would make it look more interesting to looks at, while still linking with what the poster is advertising which is a catwalk as a catwalk really is unique and full of differet patterns and designs.

Here is a second piece of work created by Yiying Lu. This piece looks like its been created by shapes that have been curved, cut and shaped to make this beautiful piece of work. The sky blue background colour really gives a calm relaxing effect that stands out and makes this piece put you in a greater mood. The solid orange and white colours used really are bright which makes this piece look refreshing and positive. This helps bring it together and make it an outstanding, simple but modern illustration. The sharp edges on all parts of the image gives it a deluxe finish which really makes it look clean and attractive.
The sharp finish on all parts of the image really give it a crisp finish which i feel is a key aspect in what i will include in my poster design.
